Women’s Health Physiotherapy
Women’s health Physiotherapy is the therapeutic treatment of all disorders affecting the pelvis and pelvic floor. There is growing evidence that physiotherapy can help alleviate and, in some cases, cure the symptoms of incontinence, prolapse, pelvic pain and constipation.
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support the pelvic organs, and forms the birth canal. These muscles need to be able to contract and relax to allow for urination, bowel movements and child birth. When the pelvic floor muscles are weak (hypotonic), or too tight (hypertonic), problems can occur.
Symptoms of urinary or bowel incontinence, urgency, pelvic organ prolapse can occur when the muscles are not functioning correctly. These issues are NOT a normal part of ageing, or are NOT a normal part of post partum life.
A structured exercise programme, tailored to the individuals needs, to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles is effective in reversing these symptoms in 80% of women.
Here at First Physio Plus, our womens health specialist will conduct an assessment of your current symtpoms and work with you to restore ‘normal’ function as much as is possible.
